Hero of the Soviet Union, retired Major General of the Airborne Forces Alexander Soluyanov, died at the age of 69. He received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1984 for his participation in the war in Afghanistan.
Valery Yuryev, a member of the central board of the Union of Paratroopers of Russia, reported the death to the agency TASS. The reason is not specified.
Title of Hero of the USSR was assigned Mr. Soluyanov “for the courage and heroism shown in the performance of international duty as part of a limited contingent of Soviet troops in Afghanistan.” At that time, he commanded the parachute battalion of the 350th Guards Parachute Regiment of the 103rd Guards Airborne Division.
In 1982, Alexander Soluyanov, during an operation to destroy rebel gangs in the Afghan province of Parvan, completed tasks without loss of personnel, captured more than 300 enemy fighters and three ammunition depots. In 1984, his battalion successfully carried out an assault on the dominant heights occupied by the enemy.
In the 1990s, director Nikita Mikhalkov planned to release a video for the song “Batyanya-Kombat” by the group “Lube”. Mr. Soluyanov took part in the filming and was to play the main role. However, “it didn’t come to installation,” Mr. Soluyanov himself told the newspaper “Arguments and Facts”. He claimed that he was only glad of this, because “the image of the battalion commander should remain collective.” “There were so many worthy officers in both Afghanistan and Chechnya. And now, during the SVO!” he said in February 2023. The eldest son took part in a military operation in Ukraine.
