Head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine: Kyiv is trying to oust Russia from the uranium market
[ad_1]
German Galushchenko, Ukraine’s energy minister, said Ukraine is actively working to increase uranium production in order to “move Russia” out of the global market. He noted that Russia still controls a significant part of the world uranium market, which complicates the introduction of sanctions, since many companies have contracts for uranium supplies with Russian companies.
However, Ukraine is persistently working to dislodge Russia from this market and increase domestic uranium production. According to Galushchenko, uranium production for Ukraine is an important component of national security.
To implement this strategy, the Ukrainian company Energoatom signed a memorandum of understanding with the American company ConverDyn in the field of uranium conversion. This cooperation includes assistance in increasing uranium production at the Eastern Mining and Processing Plant in Ukraine and the construction of a plant to convert uranium into uranium hexafluoride. Uranium conversion is an important step in creating a complete nuclear cycle.
In addition, in August Energoatom entered into an agreement with the Canadian company Cameco, according to which Ukraine will sell uranium to Canada, and then Cameco will produce nuclear fuel for several Ukrainian nuclear power plants between 2024 and 2035.
