Hans Modrow, last head of the GDR government, dies

On the night of February 11, at the age of 95, the former chairman of the Council of Ministers of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the last representative of the Communist Party in this post, Hans Modrow, died. This was announced on Saturday by the Left Party of the Bundestag on Twitter.
Modrow headed the Council of Ministers of the GDR in 1989-1990 for 150 days. He became the last representative of the Communists in this post. The politician negotiated with Germany before the unification of Germany, which he criticized.
The Left Party of Germany, formed in 2007, appeared as a result of the mergers of several parties, one of which was the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), led by Modrow during the years of the GDR.
He headed the government of the GDR from November 1989 to April 1990. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, he negotiated with the FRG for further rapprochement.
When the first free elections to the parliament of the republic were held in March 1990 in the GDR, Modrov’s party lost power. Soon the politician resigned as chairman of the Council of Ministers. Lothar de Mezieres, who replaced Modrow, was a representative of the Christian Democratic Union and the first non-communist head of government. De Maiziere also became the last head of government of the independent GDR, and then Germany was united.
When Modrow was still in power, he proposed to ensure the military neutrality of a united Germany. He critically perceived the united state, believing that the merger of the GDR and the FRG happened too quickly and unilaterally, while the interests of the socialist republic were not taken into account. He also stated that after the unification with the FRG, the republic was called an “illegal state.”
From 1990 to 1994, Modrow sat in the Bundestag as a deputy of the PDS – the Party of Democratic Socialism, which was formed when the SED merged with other parties.
From 1999 to 2004, the politician represented the PDS in the European Parliament, and then continued to advise the Left Party.
