The meeting of shareholders and the supervisory board of the German Football Association (DFB), at the proposal of DFB President Bernd Neuendorf, fired the head coach of the German national team, Hans-Dieter Flick, and his two assistants, Markus Sorg and Danni Röhl.
“The committees agreed that the senior men’s team needed a new impetus following recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and self-confidence ahead of the European Championships in our country. For me personally, this is one of the most difficult decisions in my entire career. Because I value Hansi Flick and his fellow coaches as football experts and people. However, for the DFB, sporting success has the highest priority. Therefore, this decision was inevitable,” said Mr. Neuendorf (quoted by press service DFB).
The sports director of the German national team and former football player Rudi Völler said that yesterday’s friendly match, in which the German team lost to Japan with a score of 1:4, showed that with such a composition the team can no longer progress, the press service reports.
Mr. Völler announced that he will become the head coach of the German national team for one match against France, which will take place on September 12. Hannes Wolf, who serves as the national team’s sports director for youth affairs, training and development, will also join the coaching staff for one match. After this, the DFB will search for a person who will head the coaching staff of the national team and prepare it for the European Championship, Mr. Völler added.
Hans-Dieter Flick replaced Joachim Löw as head coach of the German national team at the end of the 2021 European Championship, signing a contract until 2024. Flick was previously Löw’s assistant from 2006 to 2014 and won the World Cup with the team in Brazil in 2014. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the German team failed to reach the playoffs. The team took third place in Group E.
