World champions in rhythmic gymnastics, Russians Dina and Arina Averina, have completed their sports career. The President of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics Irina Viner spoke about this.

“Today the girls told me that they will no longer perform,” she said at a gala concert of sports stars dedicated to Defender of the Fatherland Day (quote from TASS).

The sisters confirmed this information and noted that they would continue to perform on the show. “We thought for a long time, talked with Irina Alexandrovna Viner, we had to realize and accept everything. There are many plans for the future, we will try ourselves in something new, a new stage in life is beginning, it will be interesting and eventful,” said Dina Averina.

The 25-year-old Averina sisters have been competing at various levels since they were 11 years old. Dina is an Olympic silver medalist, winner of 18 world championship gold medals and ten-time European champion. Arina became world champion five times and European champion nine times.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, Dina Averina won a silver medal, and Arina took fourth place. Representatives of the Russian national team have repeatedly filed protests against the judges’ assessments of Arina Averina’s performance. The International Gymnastics Federation found no violations.

In August 2022, the Averina sisters admitted that they would end their careers if the Russian team was not allowed to participate in the Olympics in Paris in 2024. The IOC allowed athletes from Russia to compete in a neutral status. Irina Viner later stated that the rhythmic gymnastics team would not perform without the flag and anthem of Russia.
