Guterres: Palestinian Authority must take over control of Gaza

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) should take over control of the Gaza Strip, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

“In case of a positive outcome <...> The Palestinian Authority will also take over leadership in Gaza, and then Israel will agree to serious negotiations on a two-state solution with the support of the international community,” the Secretary General said on CNN (quote according to TASS).

He added that he recognizes the difficulty of managing the enclave with Israeli troops present, so “how to organize the transition is very important.”

“I must say that there is a country that, in my opinion, has special potential and special responsibility <...>this is the United States of America,” he concluded.

On October 27, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution put forward by Arab countries that calls for an immediate truce in the conflict zone. It condemns violence against civilians on both sides, and also calls for the release of illegally held prisoners and compliance with humanitarian law – not to attack peaceful civilian targets. Israel subsequently refused to cease hostilities.

On the same day, the Israel Defense Forces announced an expansion of the ground operation in Gaza. According to the latest data, about 1,400 people were killed on the Israeli side, and more than 200 were taken hostage by militants. The Palestinian Ministry of Health said more than 11,000 people were killed as a result of Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip. The number of wounded exceeds 27,000 people.
