There are so many strains of coronavirus circulating in Russia and they are so different from the original “omicron” that it is time for them to be assigned a different Greek letter. This was stated in an interview with TASS by the director of the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N.F. Gamalei Alexander Gintsburg.

According to him, the number of strains is already in the tens. These are already hybrids that have appeared as a result of the genetic exchange of various variants of the virus. The scientist clarified that it would be wrong to call them omicron strains, since in fact they are derivatives of two strains.

Earlier, the World Health Organization clarified that the subspecies of the omicron strain XBV.1.5, or “kraken”, diagnosed at the end of last year in New York, is the most contagious sub-variant of the coronavirus during the entire pandemic. At the same time, the WHO said that there is no evidence that it is capable of causing particularly severe forms of the disease. So far, the “kraken” has been marked on the territory of 28 countries. In Russia, according to Rospotrebnadzor, it has not yet been recorded.
