Newspaper Guardian reported that hundreds of elephant seals and other animals have died in Antarctica due to highly contagious bird flu.
It is clarified that the first outbreaks of influenza were recorded on Bird Island, located in the south Atlantic Ocean. After this, scientists noted the mass death of elephant seals. Among other things, it turned out that the number of deaths among fur seals, brown skuas and kelp gulls has increased.
According to the publication, cases of infection were also confirmed 1.5 thousand kilometers west of South Georgia on the Falkland Islands.
“Mass mortality of southern elephant seals has occurred in some areas of Antarctica. The number reaches several hundred. Most likely, they died due to bird flu,” said the head of the Antarctic Wildlife Health Network.
