Russian Government highlight more than 1.3 billion rubles. to subsidize sea freight in the Kaliningrad region. The funds will be sent to the Federal Agency for Marine and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot), which will distribute them among maritime carriers. Subsidies should ensure the transportation of goods by sea at a reduced rate to the region.

“We expect that a total of about 900,000 tons of cargo will be transported in both directions by the end of December at a reduced rate,” Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said during a government meeting. The funds will be allocated from the government’s reserve fund.

It is expected that from September to December, 0.75 million tons of cargo will be delivered to the region and another 0.15 million tons will be exported from it to other regions of the country. We are talking about oil and oil products, coal, cement, peat, bricks, cars and furniture. Some of these goods were limited by European sanctions.

At the moment, cargo transportation by sea to the Kaliningrad region from other regions of Russia is carried out along two regular lines: Ust-Luga – Baltiysk and Bronka – Kaliningrad.

The sea route has become the main alternative to the delivery of goods bypassing Lithuania, which has banned the transit of a number of goods. Vilnius claimed that it did not impose any restrictions of its own, but acted in accordance with European Union sanctions. On June 18, Lithuanian Railways stopped transit to the Kaliningrad region from other regions of Russia, introducing quotas for sanctioned goods, including oil and coal.
