The Russian government has decided to introduce a mechanism to subsidize shipping between Kaliningrad and the regions, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced.

“More than 1.34 billion rubles are allocated for these purposes this year. We expect that a total of about 900,000 tons of cargo will be transported in both directions by the end of December at a reduced rate. We are talking about oil, oil products, coal, cement, peat, building bricks, as well as cars and furniture. It is important to organize the work on the distribution of subsidies between Russian shipping companies as quickly as possible,” he said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin during a working visit to the Kaliningrad region on September 1 promised to make transportation to the region more convenient and economically feasible.

In mid-June, due to EU sanctions, Lithuania suspended the transit of some cargo to the Kaliningrad region from the rest of Russia. The country also stopped letting Russian trucks with goods through. According to the authorities of Kaliningrad, about 50% of transit came under restrictions. Transit between the Kaliningrad region and other regions of Russia was restored on July 22, but some restrictions remained. At the end of August, the Lithuanian customs announced the tightening of cargo control on the border with Russia.
