The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation has developed draft documents that amend the procedure checks citizenship of Russians and its termination, as well as maintaining accounting. In case of violations of the regulations for renunciation of citizenship, persons will continue to remain Russians with the corresponding obligations.
According to the documents, the Main Directorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the relevant departments of the department will check whether the absence of citizenship, according to the documents. For those who are abroad, supervision will be carried out by the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomatic missions and consulates. Verification will take no more than two months. The period of storage of conclusions based on the results of inspections will be 85 years.
The procedure for checks is established within the framework of the law on citizenship, adopted in April 2022. In particular, he expands the list of grounds for termination of citizenship. The list of crimes that allow deprivation of citizenship includes crimes under articles on discrediting the armed forces (Article 280.3) and disseminating false information about the Russian army (Article 207.3).
In July, senators Sergei Tsekov (representing Crimea), Yekaterina Altabayeva and Sergei Kolbin (both representing Sevastopol) and Olga Bas (LPR) proposed amendments to the new version of the law, allowing even those who received it by birth to be deprived of citizenship for these violations. However, after criticism of the initiative, all co-authors, with the exception of Sergei Tsekov, withdrew their signatures.
