Negotiations between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Samarkand will signal to Western countries that Beijing supports Moscow’s foreign policy, writes the German edition Handelsblatt.
The newspaper notes that this meeting is given increased attention, and China’s relations with the leader of the West – the United States – have deteriorated significantly after the visit to Taiwan of the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
The article suggests that Pelosi’s visit had a positive impact on the rapprochement between Moscow and Beijing. The Kremlin criticized Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, supporting China.
Earlier, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, answering a question about the upcoming SCO summit, noted that the expansion of ties between Moscow and Beijing is causing concern in Washington.
