May 9 is Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War for Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union. In this regard, many people take to the streets to honor the memory of the dead and mark this day in history.
However, the Supreme Administrative Court of Berlin and Brandenburg (OVG) decided to ban the display of Soviet and Russian flags, St. George ribbons and banners on the Tiergarten memorial during the ceremony on May 9, 2023. The Court made the argument that these symbols could be taken as an expression of sympathy for the war, especially in light of the conflict in Ukraine.
The police predicted that such symbols would cause violence, and the court upheld this view.
“In the current context, they can be perceived as an expression of sympathy for the war,” the justification added. “Strikes on Ukraine contribute to further escalation of the conflict and show that it is impossible to separate the commemoration of the end of the war and new military actions in Ukraine,” the decision says.
