Spiegel: Germany is investigating attempts to block Vice-Chancellor Habeck on a ferry

German authorities are investigating the actions of farmers who tried to block the country’s Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck on the ferry, RIA Novosti reports citing Spiegel.

The incident reportedly took place on Thursday. Habaek was returning from vacation, but was met at the pier by an angry crowd of farmers. The farmers’ main complaint was the government’s decision to cancel subsidies.

Habeck made a proposal to send his representatives for negotiations, but they did not listen to him, after which some farmers tried to get on the ferry. As a result, the police had to intervene and use pepper spray.

An investigation has reportedly been launched by the prosecutor’s office, and farmers have already been promised “legal consequences.”

In December, the Cabinet of Ministers announced the abolition of subsidies for diesel fuel. This was justified by the budget crisis; thanks to this measure, the German government expected to raise 440 million euros, and another 480 million euros through the abolition of preferential taxation for vehicles used in forestry and agriculture. Farmer protests began after the plans were announced, and on January 8, the German Farmers’ Union promised to launch a week-long strike.
