Five offenders were fined by Georgian law enforcement agencies for tearing down and setting fire to the European Union flag that was hoisted outside the Georgian Parliament a few days ago. The flag was torn down and burned by leaders and supporters of the Alt-Info movement and the Conservative Movement party.
The leader of the Conservative Movement, Zurab Makharadze, and four of his supporters were fined 1,000 lari ($390) each. Representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs also reported that measures had been taken against other participants in the incident.
Since the beginning of last year, the desecration of the flag or emblem of the EU, NATO or any other international organization displayed by a state institution, as well as a country with which Georgia has diplomatic relations, has been considered an offense. For such actions, a fine or administrative imprisonment for up to 15 days is provided.
Policemen of Georgia replaced the flag in front of the parliament building.
