Alas, every year there are fewer of them: age, front-line wounds, and hardships suffered during the war years make themselves felt. How many of them are among us today?

Those who were born before 1927 inclusive could get to the front in 1941-1945, that is, now these people are 96 or more years old. According to Mosstat, a total of 19,991 people of this age lived in Moscow at the beginning of 2023.

In the Moscow region – 4,999 people.

According to the Department of the Pension Fund of the Russian Federation for Moscow and the Moscow Region, in the capital, 1,281 people received special pensions for participants in the Great Patriotic War at the beginning of 2023, and 535 people in the Moscow region.

Victory was not only won by weapons at the front – it was also forged in the rear. There were many women among the front-line soldiers, just as there were men of certain professions who had reservations from being drafted to the front: their skills and knowledge were more needed in the rear. But in the vast majority, women worked in the rear. In the Moscow region, on the very outskirts of the capital, there were battles, so the women of the Moscow region had to endure bombing, hunger, hard work, and in some areas of the Moscow region, fascist occupation.

Among those who worked in the rear, one can safely count the teenagers who got up to the machines instead of their fathers who went to the front. These can conditionally include those born in 1926-1930. At the beginning of 2023, there were 41,767 such people in Moscow, and 12,965 people in the Moscow region.

A special category is the children of war. These include those who were born in 1927-1944. There are 663,558 of them in the capital, and 307,413 in the Moscow region.

Many of the children of the war were at the same time home front workers: they got up to the machines, if not at the beginning, but in the middle or at the end of the Great Patriotic War. And the older ones at the end of the war had already been drafted into the army.

Live today in Moscow and the Moscow region and those who survived the war in other regions. For example, according to the Department of the Pension Fund of the Russian Federation for Moscow and the Moscow Region, those who were awarded the medal “Inhabitant of besieged Leningrad” receive a special pension. In Moscow, at the beginning of 2023, there were 1,133 registered people, in the Moscow Region – 331.
