Geminids and Ursids meteor showers to peak in December

According to information received from the press service of the Moscow Planetarium, maximum activity of the Geminids and Ursids meteor showers is expected in December. The Geminids, one of the strongest annual showers, will peak on the night of December 13-14. During this time, astronomers predict up to 150 meteors per hour. The Geminids are characterized by bright and white meteors that fall quite frequently. The speed of these meteors is about 35 km/s.
The Ursid meteor shower, in turn, will reach its peak on the longest night of the year – from December 21 to 22, during the winter solstice. Approximately 10 meteors per hour are expected this night. The Ursid radiant is located in the constellation Ursa Minor, and the source of these meteors is comet 8P/Tuttle. The speed of Ursid meteors is about 32 km/s. It is important to note that the Ursids can only be observed in the Northern Hemisphere.
