FSB disclosed data on the departure of Russians abroad from July to September

For the third quarter of 2022 (July-September), the number of departures of Russians to Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia and Abkhazia has become a record over the past five years. This follows from the FSB data on the departure of Russians to foreign countries for the third quarter of 2022, which was analyzed by RBC.

In the third quarter, 9.7 million citizens left Russia, which is almost twice as many as in the second quarter (5 million). Despite this, the figure is below the pre-pandemic level of 2019, when the FSB recorded 16.1 million departures of Russians in the third quarter.

At the same time, 70% of all trips were made to five countries – these are Abkhazia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Finland. Among them, Abkhazia became the leader: over the entire period, 2.5 million people entered this country. The second place is occupied by Turkey (about 2.1 million people). As noted in the statistics, the main purpose of visiting this country was tourism. Abkhazia and Turkey have been leading in the third quarter in terms of the number of departures of Russians since at least 2018.

The third place in terms of the number of departures is occupied by Kazakhstan – Russians entered there 1.3 million times in the third quarter. At the same time, 1 million times Russians crossed the Russian-Kazakh border by car. By plane, Russians crossed this border 119 thousand times, by train – 97 thousand times.

Other countries where Russians traveled most often in the third quarter:

• Georgia – 461 thousand departures (maximum for this period since 2018);
• Finland — 430 thousand departures (187% more than in the same period in 2021);
• Armenia – 267 thousand departures (maximum for this period since 2018);
• Kyrgyzstan – 167 thousand times (100% more than in 2019);
• Uzbekistan – 126 thousand times (102% more than in 2019).
