French Parliament enshrines the right to abortion in the Constitution

The French Parliament has passed a bill that amends the Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to terminate a pregnancy. President Macron initiated this initiative. During a special meeting in Versailles on March 4, 780 members of both houses of parliament voted in favor of introducing into the Constitution “the guaranteed freedom of women to have abortion,” while 72 deputies and senators opposed it.

“Our message to all women is: your body is yours and no one can make decisions for you,” Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said. France thereby becomes the first country in the world to enshrine the right to abortion in its Constitution.
