France’s Marchand broke Phelps’ 2008 world record in the 400m individual medley

French swimmer Leon Marchand took 1st place in the final swim at a distance of 400 m complex at the World Championships (WCH) in aquatics. He broke the world record set by American Olympic champion Michael Phelps in 2008.
Marchand swam the distance in 4 minutes. 2.5 sec. The second was Carson Foster from the USA (+4.06 sec.), the 3rd place was taken by the Japanese Daiiya Seto (+4.09 sec.).
Phelps record 4 min. 3.84 seconds, set at the Beijing Olympics, was the last unbeaten personal record of the 23-time Olympic champion.
Marshall is 21 years old. He won gold in the 400m and 200m individual medley and silver in the 200m butterfly at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships.
Michael Phelps, now 38, holds the all-time record for most gold medals (23) and total medals (28) in Olympic history.
The 2023 World Aquatics Championships will take place in Fukushima, Japan, from 14 to 30 July.
