France called for an urgent convening of a meeting of the UN Security Council

Paris demands to immediately convene a meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh. About it it says in a statement by the French Foreign Ministry.

“France demands an emergency convening of a meeting of the UN Security Council. It is working closely with its European and American partners to deliver a decisive response commensurate with the risks this unacceptable offensive poses to regional security,” it said.

Paris condemns the start of hostilities by Baku in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Foreign Ministry emphasized. It added that “nothing can justify such unilateral actions” that pose a threat to the civilian population. The French Foreign Ministry also called on Azerbaijan to immediately stop “anti-terrorist measures” in the region and comply with international law.

September 19, Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan announced on the start of “anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh to “restorate the constitutional order” of the republic. The department pointed to increased tension in Karabakh due to “systematic shelling” by Armenia, mining of territories, as well as Yerevan’s strengthening of combat positions with personnel and weapons.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia condemned Baku’s actions and called them “large-scale aggression.” Yerevan also appealed to the UN Security Council against the backdrop of the outbreak of hostilities in Karabakh, and the Prime Minister of the Republic Nikol Pashinyan convened meeting of the Security Council of Armenia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow is “deeply alarmed by the sharp escalation of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russian peacekeepers continue to fulfill their mission in the region. “The Russian side urges the conflicting parties to stop the bloodshed, immediately cease hostilities and return to the path of political and diplomatic settlement,” she said.
