Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has been charged with an anti-doping rule violation by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). In October, she was suspended from the competition due to a banned drug found in a sample taken in August. The new accusation is related to violations in the biological passport.
“We understand that today’s announcement complicates an already high-profile situation. Since the beginning of this process, we have been committed to engaging with Halep in a sensitive, efficient and timely manner,” Nicole Sapstead, Anti-Doping Director at ITIA, said in a statement.
The tennis player herself denies the allegations. She calls herself a “victim of contagion”. “Three world-renowned experts who studied my tests made it absolutely clear that my blood is completely normal. The only thing I hope for at the moment is the opportunity to finally get access to independent and impartial judges in the tribunal, ”she wrote on Instagram (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
The 31-year-old Halep has 24 WTA titles. She has won Grand Slams twice. The last time she took first place in the WTA rankings was in 2017.
