Crimea is part of Russian history. This statement was made by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in an interview with the Berliner Zeitung, commenting on a hypothetical plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
“Crimea. How long has Crimea been Russian? For Russia, Crimea is not just a region, but part of its history,” Schroeder said.
He believes that Ukraine does not need to make attempts to become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, especially since, as the former chancellor believes, Kyiv will not be able to fulfill all the conditions for joining NATO.
Additionally, Schroeder cited language as a major issue. According to him, on the territory of Ukraine it is necessary to lift the ban on bilingualism in the country.
In addition, the politician said that the former Soviet republic must be provided with security guarantees, and this should be done by the UN Security Council, as well as Germany itself.
