Deputy Nilov: Latvia can close the Baltic to Russian ships only on paper

Russian State Duma deputy from St. Petersburg Oleg Nilov said that Latvia can only close the Baltic Sea to Russian ships in words or on paper.
The President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, considered it necessary to warn the day before that the Baltic Sea could be closed to all Russian vessels if the investigation reveals Russian participation in the damage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline.
“To implement this crazy idea, they will have to declare war on Russia,” a Russian parliamentarian identified the problem in Rinkevichs’ words. “It will be interesting to see how a Latvian calf will eat a Russian bear.” “Perhaps they can ban it,” he added. “But only in words or on paper.”
Balticconnector is a gas pipeline along the bottom of the Gulf of Finland, about 80 km long, between Inkoo (Finland) and Paldiski (Estonia), which was launched in December 2019.
On October 8, the pressure in the underwater pipe dropped, after which the work of the gas pipeline was suspended. Police believe the damage was most likely done intentionally. The leak itself is located in Finnish territorial waters.
