Former co-chair of the PARNAS regional branch sentenced to seven years in prison for spreading fake news about the army

The Central District Court of Togliatti sentenced Andrey Balin, former co-chairman of the Samara branch of the PARNAS party, to seven years in a penal colony. Information “Kommersant” was confirmed by the activist’s lawyer Zakhar Lebedev.

Also, Andrei Balin was banned from administering sites for a period of four years.

The activist was found guilty of disseminating false information about the Russian army motivated by political hatred (clause “e”, part 2, article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The criminal case is connected with six posts by Mr. Balin on VKontakte about the military conflict in Ukraine. “In general, the case materials contain more posts, but he is charged with six posts,” Zakhar Lebedev specified.

At the same time, the state prosecutor requested nine years in prison for the defendant, and also demanded a ban on administering websites for five years. The criminal case was initiated in the summer of 2022.
