Former CIA adviser explains why the upcoming winter will be Russia’s trump card

The coming winter will be “a trump card in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s sleeve,” former CIA adviser James Rickards wrote in an op-ed for The Daily Reckoning.
He noted that in winter, Western countries may face great difficulties, including a serious recession in the economy. He recalled that the previous winter was very mild, and even in such conditions, Europe survived it with difficulty, diversifying energy resources.
“The trump card in the sleeve for Putin will be the upcoming winter of 2024. The weather may not be as favorable next year. Russia can be more ruthless when it comes to effectively cutting off natural gas supplies,” he said, predicting rising energy prices.
Rickards also stressed that the sanctions regime against Russia most of all hits the countries that introduced it, primarily the United States.
The analyst notes that anti-Russian sanctions have led to the opposite effect and caused more harm to the US economy itself.
The West stepped up sanctions pressure against Moscow due to the conflict in Ukraine, which led to an increase in prices for electricity, fuel and food in Europe and the United States. Vladimir Putin has previously said that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy for the West, and sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy.
