Forensic experts have ordered a further investigation into the death of Friends actor Matthew Perry.

The cause of death of “Friends” actor Matthew Perry at his residence on Saturday will require additional investigation by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office before authorities reach any conclusion, CNN reports.

The medical examiner’s office updated its online record for Perry Sunday afternoon, listing his cause of death as “delayed.”

“In cases where the cause of death cannot be determined at the time of autopsy, a deferred certificate will be issued until additional investigations are completed,” the Los Angeles Coroner’s manual states.

An autopsy has been performed, but experts are awaiting toxicology reports to determine Perry’s cause of death, the medical examiner’s office told CNN on Sunday. These reports can take weeks to complete.

Investigators plan to use toxicology reports to determine whether any foreign substances may have contributed to Matthew Perry’s death, a law enforcement source said.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Unit is investigating Perry’s death, but a law enforcement source told CNN that no foul play is suspected. On Sunday, medical examiner’s records showed the actor’s remains were ready to be released to his next of kin.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told CNN that a 911 call was received at 4:07 p.m. Saturday about a water rescue emergency. LAPD responded at 4:10 p.m. and shortly after described the call as a death investigation.

Matthew Perry, 54, was found unconscious in his hot tub, the Los Angeles Times reports, citing law enforcement sources.

Perry’s parents, John Bennett Perry and Suzanne Morrison, along with his stepfather, Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison, were spotted at the actor’s home on Saturday evening after police arrived there.

On Sunday, Perry’s family released a statement to People magazine saying they were “heartbroken by the tragic loss of their beloved son and brother.”

“Matthew brought so much joy to the world as an actor and friend,” the statement said. “You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the overwhelming outpouring of love.”

Perry was open about his struggles. He chronicled his recovery from drug and alcohol addiction and his dedication to helping others in his book, Friends, Lovers and the Big Bad: A Memoir, which he released in November 2022.

“The best thing about me, without exception, is that if someone comes to me and says, “I can’t stop drinking, can you help me?”, I can say yes, go ahead and do it,” he said while appearing on the Q with Tom Power podcast last year, discussing his book.

Perry went on to say that he wanted to be remembered “as a man who lived well, loved well, was a seeker” and that “the most important thing to him is that he wants to help people.” “This is what I want,” he said.

Perry struggled with addiction at the height of his career on Friends and said during an interview that it made him unable to watch the show.

Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc starred alongside Perry in the series Friends, which ran from 1994 to 2004. The actors have not yet commented on Perry’s death, CNN notes.

On Sunday, “Friends” co-creators Marta Kaufman and David Crane and executive producer Kevin Bright released a statement to CNN saying they were “shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved friend Matthew.”

“It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as a part of our lives,” their statement read. “He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliché to say that an actor creates his role, but in Matthew’s case, nothing could be truer. From the day we first heard him play Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.”
