The Russian authorities will expand the Upper Lars checkpoint, located on the border with Georgia. This was stated by the director of the 4th department of the CIS countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry Denis Gonchar.
“On the Georgian side, the road infrastructure is being modernized, including the construction of a tunnel under the Krestovy pass,” Gonchar said, quoted by TASS.
On the Russian side, according to him, “the Upper Lars checkpoint is being expanded.
The diplomat also said that the construction work will not affect the throughput of the checkpoint.
Earlier, Gonchar stated that the Foreign Ministry allowed the restoration of direct flights between Russia and Georgia. In Georgia, they noted that now this issue is not on the agenda.
After the announcement of partial mobilization by Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 21, queues formed on the land borders of Russia. After 5 days, the number of cars on the Russian-Georgian border reached almost 5 thousand, including 1.3 thousand trucks. 10,000 cars crossed the border per day.
On September 26, an armored personnel carrier was sent to the Upper Lars checkpoint in case citizens break through the checkpoint in order to leave the country “without border formalities”.
The next day, it was announced that a mobilization point of the military commissariat would be set up in Upper Lars of the Russian Federation. Later, such checkpoints appeared at other checkpoints in other regions. Mobile recruiting offices worked until the end of October.
