Foreign Ministry announced the cancellation of Lavrov's visit to Minsk due to the death of Minister Makei

It was decided to postpone the visit to Minsk of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who planned to meet with Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei. The latter died suddenly on November 26, the meeting of the collegiums of ministries was postponed, reported in the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“In connection with the untimely death on November 26 of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus V.V. November,” the statement said.

The ministry promised to additionally announce new dates for Lavrov’s visit to Minsk.

Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei died on Saturday at the age of 65, BelTA reported with reference to the press secretary of the Ministry of the Republic Anatoly Glaz. That declared Sputnik Belarus that on Friday, Makei discussed work plans for the week. “He died suddenly a few hours ago. Nothing foreshadowed. A big loss for all of us,” Glaz said.

On November 27, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement in connection with the death of Makei, Lavrov sent a telegram of condolences to the minister’s wife. The department noted that Makei was “a true friend of Russia, who made a unique contribution to the comprehensive development of broad bilateral cooperation, the integration building of the Union State, and the strengthening of ties between the fraternal peoples” of the two countries.
