Media: Iranian Majlis approved the country’s entry into the SCO

Iran’s Majlis (Parliament) approved by a majority of votes a bill on the state’s accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Mehr news agency reported on Sunday.
205 parliamentarians voted for the bill. Three members of the Majlis opposed, 4 abstained.
The official representative of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Majlis, Abolfazl Amuyi, said that “the condition for Iran’s membership is the approval of all documents” that have been adopted by the SCO so far.
If the organization “approves any new document in the near future, the Majlis will also have to consider and approve it,” Amuyi said.
At the end of September, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi signed a bill on the country’s accession to the SCO and sent it to the Majlis for consideration.
On September 15-16, the SCO summit was held in Samarkand. The leaders of the participating countries met in narrow and expanded formats and held a series of bilateral meetings. As a result of the summit, the process of admitting Belarus to the SCO as a full member was launched, and Iran signed a memorandum of commitment in order to join the association.
Qatar and Egypt have become dialogue partners, while Bahrain, Myanmar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and the Maldives have launched the procedure for acquiring this status.
