For the first time in three years since the start of the pandemic, Japanese residents were able to come to the palace of Emperor Naruhito in order to congratulate the monarch and his family on the New Year, RIA Novosti correspondent reports.
The last time they could congratulate the monarch on January 2, 2020, then traditional visits were canceled due to fears of the spread of coronavirus in a dense crowd. Then, as in past years, anyone could come to the imperial palace complex and, standing in line, go through the gate at the “palace bridge” – a humpbacked bridge near the fortress wall – and find themselves on the court square. And then – to greet the imperial family, which several times a day goes out to the glazed veranda, and the emperor reads a short congratulatory speech.
This year, everyone had to submit applications, from which those who were able to see the monarch in person on Monday were selected by lottery. According to the Imperial Court Administration, there are 9,606 such people out of 102,000 applicants.
