For the first time in the world, Russian doctors transplanted bone marrow to a child with Clericusio syndrome

Specialists from the Bone Marrow Transplantation Department of the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital (RCCH) were the first in the world to transplant hematopoietic stem cells into a child with Clericusio syndrome, a rare genetic disease. This is reported in Telegram channel RDKB.

The operation was performed on a boy from the Bryansk region. He suffered from constant and long-term illnesses from birth. During the examination, doctors discovered he had Clericusio syndrome.

There are several hundred patients with this syndrome known in the world. It manifests itself in autoimmune reactions. Possible hearing loss and pathologies of skeletal development. One of the symptoms of the disease is poikiloderma, areas of pigmentation and depigmentation on the skin.

In the case of bone marrow transplantation for patients with rare genetic diseases, one of the main difficulties is choosing the right chemotherapy. On the 35th day after transplantation, the new bone marrow took root.

After the operation, the boy received immunosuppressive therapy. Now he comes to the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital for examinations. Doctors talk about the success of the treatment, since the bone marrow is now fully functioning. The boy’s immune system was restored and the pathological process of the skin stopped.

In August, doctors from the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital were in Russia for the first time transplanted bone marrow for a child with alpha-mannosidosis. With this disease, the metabolism of oligosaccharides is disrupted. The bone marrow engrafted on the 19th day.
