Scientists have told how clinical nutrition can cope with post-COVID disorders

According to various international studies, more than 70% of people who have had covid experience at least one symptom of post-covid. The diagnosis of post-coronavirus syndrome (PCS) was included in the international classification of diseases at the end of 2020, but until now, scientists have not exactly established what causes it, and most importantly, how to treat it. There are many versions and many proposals, but there are no methods with proven effectiveness yet.

During the XV Annual All-Russian Congress on Infectious Diseases named after Academician V.I. Pokrovsky, Russian scientists announced new data on changing the approach to the nature and treatment of post-COVID syndrome. In their opinion, the virus acts on the body like carbon monoxide. And to fight it, you need medical nutrition.

Scientists note that, in principle, any respiratory virus has a devastating effect on the body, but such long-term manifestations of ailments that are observed today after covid have never been seen in the entire history of medicine. And, of course, all over the world they are trying to understand what is so unusual in SARS-CoV-2, which is not in other SARS. Tatyana Pilat, Doctor of Medical Sciences, a member of the Commission on Dietetics of the Healthcare Expert Council of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Russia, said that severe symptoms of post-COVID disorder are observed even in those who have had the virus in a mild form: “Any viral pathologies are toxic to the body. The flu releases a group of toxins into the body. The action of the influenza virus is equated with the action of capillary toxic poison, the influenza virus promotes the formation of free radicals and causes oxidative stress. And the coronavirus causes hypoxia, similar to hemic, as in gas poisoning or altitude sickness. Under the influence of SARS-CoV-2, cells involved in the supply of oxygen to tissues are destroyed, hypoxia leads to the accumulation of decay products. The breakdown of red blood cells causes the release of hemoglobin, which can transfer oxygen to tissues, and the process of acidosis begins. Therefore, covid causes symptoms of acute endogenous intoxication due to the accumulation of toxic substances in the blood at concentrations that make it impossible to naturally detoxify the body. Symptoms of intoxication syndrome: fatigue, irritability, nervousness, headaches, weakness, sweating, sleep disturbance, depression, memory impairment, gastrointestinal disturbances, skin rashes and much more. Toxic stress is at the heart of post-Covid.”

The expert notes that intoxication can be acute and chronic, and in all cases, such patients have a disturbed nutritional status: they are less able to absorb nutrients and useful trace elements (including due to loss of appetite, taste and smell disorders, medication, psychological problems). As therapeutic measures for poisoning, enterosorbents and antioxidants are needed. In addition, as our studies have established, post-COVID patients require specialized therapeutic nutrition, which should perform the task of detoxifying the body. “For example, grapefruit and lime should be used very carefully in such patients – they inhibit detoxification processes. We conducted studies among 1.5 thousand people prone to various types of intoxication, including after covid, and identified markers of intoxication – indicators that indicate an increase in the process. This is the level of cholesterol, glucose, ESR, CRP, bilirubin, urea, liver enzymes, alkaline phosphatase and many others. Against the background of therapeutic nutrition, we observed a significant improvement in the condition of patients, increased efficiency and normalization of intoxication markers. And best of all, the condition and markers improved in patients with post-COVID: their ESR decreased by 35%. In addition, their levels of cholesterol, bilirubin, and liver enzymes decreased, ”the expert continues.

…Several scientific papers around the world have established links between gut microbiota composition, cytokine levels, and inflammatory markers in patients with COVID-19. This suggests that the gut microbiome influences the severity of COVID-19, possibly through modulation of host immune responses. In addition, dysbiosis of the gut microbiota that persists after resolution of the disease may influence the long-term persistence of symptoms, which doctors say highlights the need to understand how gut microbes are involved in inflammation and COVID-19.

During the pandemic, a lot of evidence has emerged that for a quick recovery from a coronavirus infection, it is important to have a large amount of trace elements, including zinc and selenium. For example, selenium is part of the active sites of antioxidant enzymes that protect us from oxidative stress. However, in a number of Russian regions there is little selenium in the soil, so all the fruits and vegetables that are grown there are poor in it. First of all, it is the Far East and Siberia. And here is what the research data showed: in those areas where there is enough selenium in the soil and in food, the mortality from COVID-19 is five times lower than in areas where there is a shortage of it.

Research by scientists continues, and someday the day will come when reliable remedies for covid and post-covid will be found.
