Folk signs on February 25: fish is now better than meat

February 25 in the folk calendar is Alekseev’s Day, or Aleksey Rybny. In addition, this year it is still the sixth day of Maslenitsa, Zolovka gatherings.

On Saturday, the sisters-in-law, that is, the sisters of the husband, came to visit the daughter-in-law. The hostess had to set the festive table, please her sister-in-laws in everything and give each of them at least a small gift. If the sisters-in-law are unmarried, the daughter-in-law invited other unmarried girls to visit, and if her brother’s sisters are married, then all her guests also had to be family. This tradition was especially observed in young families. The guests assessed the housekeeping of the young wife, watched how she communicates with her husband and with the guests, judged by this how good their new relative is.

According to popular beliefs, snow begins to melt actively from Alekseev’s Day, so fishermen can expect a good catch. Traditionally, fish dishes were served at the table on this day – it was believed that this would bring good luck and prosperity to the house, and the fishermen would also ensure success in fishing. But it was impossible to eat meat on Alekseev’s day – it was believed that this was to troubles and diseases of the abdomen.

They tried not to start new things on this day, but to complete the long-begun, the day was considered successful.

Our ancestors also believed that a new thing worn today, or at least an accessory, could bring good luck, while old, shabby clothes, on the contrary, could attract some old problems to the one who put it on.

Among other signs of this day were the following: you can’t go on a long journey – there will be no way; you can’t quarrel and swear – to a protracted conflict; one must not deceive – or oneself will soon be deceived, one must not plot evil and commit evil deeds – otherwise, you will incur a series of misfortunes and failures.

Folk signs on February 25 are as follows:

– the colder the last days of February, the warmer will be March;

– if the sparrows chirped – to the thaw;

– if it seems that the stars are red – to a blizzard;

– if frost fell at night – to a snowfall;

– if the wind blows, but there is no frost, the blizzard will be strong.
