Folk calendar: November 5 – Dmitriev parental Saturday

November 5 in the folk calendar is the day of Jacob, and in the Christian calendar – Dmitrievskaya parental Saturday. On this day, they bless the earth so that the next year’s harvest is good, and they commemorate the deceased ancestors.

Fine snow often fell on Jacob, which was called groats, because in appearance it resembled coarsely threshed grain. On this day, it was customary to “feed the land”, which they were going to sow next year – they took a part of the pie, which was prepared for Kazanskaya, to the field, and crumbled it on the ground. It was believed that if the birds pecked all the crumbs, and even chirped at the same time, then the earth would calm down and give a good harvest next year. In addition, they believed that such a rite could bring good luck.

Another November 5 is Dmitrievskaya parental Saturday, the day of commemoration of the dead. Orthodox on this day commemorate their deceased relatives of the older generation, attend church and go to the cemetery, and then arrange memorial meals. Be sure to lay a clean tablecloth on the table. Meals should be hearty, tasty, but simple. At the same time, it is good that the favorite dishes of those who are commemorated were present on the table.

It is not customary to have fun on the parental Saturday, so the feasts did without laughter and dancing.

Also, according to popular beliefs, on this day you can not drink water on an empty stomach – otherwise life will become gray and bleak; you can’t vouch for other people – this promises trouble; you can’t refuse those who ask for alms – otherwise you yourself will become poor; you can’t do an unfamiliar business related to finances – you can lose everything.

Natural signs on November 5 are as follows:

– if it started to rain, next year there will be a rich harvest;

– if there is a lot of snow and it does not melt, the winter will be mild;

– if the snow falls in the form of cereals – the winter will be harsh and early;

– if the first snow fell on this day – there are still 40 days before winter, if the snow cover falls for the second time – consider winter has begun.

Dreams that occurred on the night of November 5 usually do not mean anything. Whatever you dream about, you can forget it with a light heart.
