The first case of human infection with virus B, also known as simian herpes virus, has been reported in Hong Kong.
How reports Dimsum Daily, the victim is a 37-year-old man with no particular health problems. He was admitted to Yan Chai Hospital on March 21 after he developed a fever and deteriorated consciousness. He is currently in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
The examination confirmed the presence of virus B in a sample of the patient’s cerebrospinal fluid. Preliminary investigations and information provided by the patient’s family indicate he was exposed to and injured by wild monkeys while visiting Cam Shan Country Park in late February. Epidemiological investigations are currently underway to gather more detailed information.
This is the first reported case of B virus infection in Hong Kong, and similar cases have previously been reported in other countries, including the United States, Canada, mainland China and Japan. Typically, these cases occur as a result of bites or scratches inflicted by monkeys, but transmission of the virus from person to person is extremely rare.
