Finnish border guards used gas canisters against a group of migrants who arrived from Russia at the Finnish border point of Niirala and tried to break through the border, Ria Novosti reports, citing a story from the MTV3 channel.
A group of about 30 people reportedly arrived at the Niirala border crossing on Friday evening on foot and by bicycle.
“People tried to cross the border, but border guards stopped them. One of the arrivals was sprayed with gas in the face when he tried to run past the border guards,” the report says.
On Friday at 18:00 a year record was set for the number of people arriving from Russia who requested asylum in Finland. As of 18:00, 96 applications for asylum from citizens of Syria, Iraq and other countries were submitted at border crossing points in South-East Finland, and five applications were submitted at the Vartius checkpoint.
In total, since the beginning of the year, 335 asylum applications have been submitted at the land border with Russia, with the largest number – 75 applications – submitted on November 14.
The Finnish Cabinet of Ministers, due to the worsening situation with migration on the border with Russia, decided to completely close the border checkpoints in the southeast of the country closest to St. Petersburg from November 18 to February 18, 2024. Four out of eight checkpoints will be closed; the remaining operating checkpoints are located in northern Finland.
