Outgoing Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has applied jointly with her husband, Markus Räikkönen, as they announced on social media.

Sanna Marin filed for divorce with her husband of three years, Markus Räikkönen, they announced on Wednesday.

“We are grateful for 19 years of marriage and for our beloved daughter. We will remain best friends, ”wrote the parting spouses.

Marin and Räikkönen, who until recently worked at a venture capital firm, have a five-year-old daughter. They got married as recently as August 2020, when Sanna Marin was in her post dealing with the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We spent our youth together, entered adulthood together and became parents to our dear daughter together,” Marin wrote on social media following her wedding to Raikkonen in August 2020.

Marin and Räikkönen’s divorce was preceded by two dramatic career decisions. Marin announced on April 5, shortly after the parliamentary elections, that she was stepping down as leader of the Social Democratic Party. Markus Räikkönen announced the day before that he was leaving venture capital firm Headline, where he worked as an investor. Later it became known that he was starting a new job as a consultant and investor in the Helsinki company ReOrbit.

Recall that Sanna Marin and her party lost last month’s parliamentary elections in Finland, losing to the right-wing National Coalition Party and the Finnish Nationalist Party. After that, the Prime Minister announced her impending resignation.
