President Niinistö: Finland is not ready to hand over its fighter jets to Ukraine.
Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said on Wednesday that Helsinki is not ready to transfer its fighter jets to Kyiv. He said this at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky arrived in Finland that day on an unannounced visit.
Answering journalists’ questions about whether there will be deliveries of fighters to Ukraine, Niinistö said: “Finland only has old Hornet aircraft that will be replaced” and that his country “now needs strong security”
Niinistö also stated that Finland should first receive the F-35s it had ordered so that the current fleet could be “written off”. But he believes that “years will pass” and during this time, “Hornets will have time to become obsolete.”
At the same time, the President of Finland noted that Helsinki is ready to continue supporting Ukraine and reminded that 15 aid packages from Finland have already been transferred to Kyiv, and the sixteenth is “on the way”.
