A fifth-grader stabbed a friend of the same age right at school – this news is still difficult to comprehend. The girl brought a knife to the educational institution in advance, called a classmate to the toilet during the break and inflicted about a hundred stab wounds there.
What happens to our children if this becomes possible? MK talked about this with family and child psychologist Elena Moshkova.
“Now many blame computer games for all the troubles – and in this wildest case, such a game seems to have become the reason for the quarrel between friends,” says Moshkova. – I can’t agree with that. Indeed, over the past year, cases of child aggression and cruelty have increased significantly. However, computer games, with all their disadvantages, did not appear yesterday – they have entered our lives for twenty years already. But what has changed recently is the general atmosphere, constant talk about military operations, anxiety and hostility. In my opinion, all this affects the psychological state of children, their not yet fully formed ideas about good and evil.
The main problem is that death has become commonplace, that murder and violence are no longer taboo. If children hear that something like this happens somewhere on a daily basis, then they have an unconscious feeling that this is quite acceptable for them.
What would my advice be to parents in this situation? Only one thing: to be around and talk to children as much as possible. How exactly to talk to them and about what – I won’t say, all children and parents are different, and there is no single algorithm for such conversations. But be sure to warn the child that not all people are kind and good – as we often inspired them before. Today, sadly, a child must be prepared to face evil. Therefore, the topic of trusting relationships with parents, which has always been very important, but now has become simply vital, comes to the fore. If the girl who suffered from her ex-girlfriend had told her parents in time about the conflict that had arisen, perhaps such a disaster would not have happened.
If you feel that the child has withdrawn, turned gloomy, has changed his usual behavior in one way or another – do not be shy, go to school, ask the class teacher and other teachers. People who observe children in their daily interactions can notice and know much more than the parents themselves.
