FIFA has officially approved the new format for the World Cup. The participants of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each, according to the organization’s website.
The top two teams from each group and the eight teams from third place in their quartet will advance to the playoffs.
In the original plans, the teams were going to be divided into 16 groups of three teams each.
The new format of the tournament was approved ahead of the upcoming 73rd Congress of the International Football Federation in Rwanda.
The upcoming World Cup 2026 will be held in Mexico, Canada and the United States. The tournament in the recent history of football will set a record for the number of participants in the final stage – 48. In the period from 1998 to 2022, 32 teams competed for the title of the strongest on the planet.
