The International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) have warned the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) about exclusion if a virtual executive committee is held on December 20. This was announced by UAF Vice President Oleg Protasov, who published a letter on Facebook (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).
FIFA and UEFA insist that the Ukrainian association must resolve pressing issues without the influence of third parties. The organizations believe that the Ukrainian Football Association is under pressure. The letter notes that a violation of the independence rule “may lead to the suspension of the UAF membership in FIFA and UEFA in accordance with Art. 16 of the FIFA Statutes and Art. 9 of the UEFA Statutes.
In December, Andriy Shevchenko, the legendary Ukrainian football player and former head coach of the national football team of Ukraine, was officially nominated for the position of UAF President. To discuss his candidacy, a meeting of the UAF executive committee was scheduled on December 20. FIFA and UEFA believe that it is being promoted by the Ukrainian authorities.
FIFA did not show “political” video with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of the World Cup final in Qatar on December 18. The decision was criticized in the office of the Ukrainian president.
