Fenerbahçe players had to fight off Trabzonspor fans

The Turkish Football Championship has attracted attention for the second time this season due to riots at the stadium. The incident, which received a reaction from the President of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, happened on Sunday, immediately after the end of the match in which Trabzonspor lost to Fenerbahce with a score of 2:3. The visiting players began to celebrate the victory in the center of the field, which did not please the home fans. They poured onto the field and tried to beat other players. The football players gave a serious fight back. As a result of the incident, a dozen suspects have already been detained, and the Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation into the incident.
The match of the 30th round of the Turkish Championship, in which Trabzonspor hosted Fenerbahce, turned out to be a battle in every sense. The teams are neighbors in the standings (“Fenerbahçe” is second, “Trabzonspor” is third), but there has been no talk of direct competition between them for a long time. Fenerbahçe was 27 points ahead of its Sunday opponent (now 30). Another thing is that both the Istanbul team and the team from Trabzon could not afford to lose points. Fenerbahce is in the race for the leading Galatasaray, and Besiktas is hot on the heels of Trabzonspor. And one more point is worth noting. Fenerbahçe has lost only once in the current championship. And specifically to Trabzonspor (at home with a score of 2:3). So there was no need to somehow artificially inflate the intrigue in this meeting.
As for the match itself, it turned out to be very intriguing. The guests scored twice in the first half, the hosts equalized the score in the second half, but in the 87th minute Michy Batshuayi brought Fenerbahce victory. The people of Istanbul began to celebrate it right in the central circle.
Well, the local public, already annoyed that Trabzonspor missed a draw at the close of the match, was completely upset by the sight of someone else’s joy. So much so that dozens of fans poured onto the field with the intention of beating the opposing players.
It turned out chaotic and, admittedly, not very convincing. For example, Istanbul defender Bright Oseyi-Samuel knocked down one of the fans with a well-placed hook, after which, in the style of an MMA fighter, he switched to finishing mode. And the already mentioned Batshuayi gave a Chuck Norris-style performance with his “deadly” roundhouse kick, putting the uninvited guest on the grass.
After the intervention of security and police, 12 people from among the Trabzonspor fans who ran onto the field were detained. Later, as reported by the Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs, five more people were arrested for calling for cruelty against Fenerbahce players through social networks. Authorities said that an official investigation into the incident has been launched and all those responsible will be punished. Soon after the incident, FIFA President Gianni Infantino reacted to it, noting that what happened in the Turkish Championship was “completely unacceptable either on the field or in general in the sports community.”
The quick reaction of the head of FIFA is understandable. After all, this is not the first time this season that the Turkish championship has attracted increased attention due to a scandal. The first case was recorded in December last year in the match between Ankaragucu and Rizespor. After the final whistle, Ankaragucu President Faruk Koca and his entourage ran onto the field, punched the match referee in the eye (he later justified himself by saying that he actually just wanted to spit in the referee’s face, but something went wrong) and started kicking him feet. The scandal was so loud that the Turkish Football Federation even suspended the national championship, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally took control of the investigation. Everything was resolved by the fact that Faruk Koca and a couple of his associates received lifelong disqualifications. Several more people got off with lighter sentences.
