Extinction Rebellion activists rally in Amsterdam in front of Rembrandt’s masterpiece

At the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, members of the Extinction Rebellion movement held an environmental action on Sunday in front of Rembrandt’s Night Watch. This was reported by the publication Le Figaro.
The action went like this: two activists were holding a poster with a copy of a Rembrandt painting, on which, unlike the original, people were standing in the water.
Thus, the movement wanted to draw public attention to the problem of rising water levels in the oceans, and also to call on the art museum where the Night Watch is exhibited to refuse to cooperate with companies that use fossil fuels.
The name “Night Watch” became more popular for the group portrait of the artist “Performance of the rifle company of Captain Frans Banning Cock and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenbürg.” Rembrandt wrote it in 1642 by order of the Shooting Society – a detachment of civilian militia. The work is considered the pinnacle of the master’s creativity.
The Rijksmuseum reported that the masterpiece was not damaged, and the protesters were escorted to the exit.
