Express: After leaving the CFE Treaty, Russia may rearm

The withdrawal of the Russian Federation from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) could lead to its army receiving fundamentally new weapons. This opinion was expressed by national security expert William Freer.
In an interview with Express, Freer called the CFE Treaty a historic treaty of the Cold War, noting that withdrawing from it was nothing more than a symbolic step for Moscow.
At the same time, the expert called on the West to “carefully monitor” how Russia is building up its military power, and also suggested that Western states increase their own defense spending.
Earlier, Kremlin Speaker Dmitry Peskov said that there are now no prerequisites for dialogue on the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), although it is necessary. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation explained that such a dialogue “cannot be carried out in the mode of one country reading notations to another country.”
Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov expressed confidence that the United States We didn’t plan a dialogue with the Russian Federation at all on collective security and openly circumvented the group restrictions of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.
