A dog handler gave tips on caring for pets during holiday fireworks
For dogs, New Year’s fireworks are not entertainment, but stress, said Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Canine Federation (RKF), in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He noted that it is impossible to predict a dog’s reaction to the sounds of fireworks, and the matter may even end with the pet running away. According to him, statistics on lost dogs are much higher during the New Year celebrations. Golubev noted that it is better for the dog to be away from fireworks.
“Such events are stressful for any dog. Your pet will not share the joy of the New Year holiday with you; he may get seriously scared and run away,” the expert said.
He noted that dogs have excellent hearing, and even a not too loud explosion of fireworks can frighten him greatly. According to Golubev, even training is powerless in this situation.
“Cowardly, insecure animals or those who have had unpleasant experiences are especially sensitive to loud noises,” he said, especially noting the negative impact of fireworks on the psyche of puppies, as well as dogs that are just getting used to a new owner.
He called for people to stop walking during fireworks, or to walk where fireworks are not allowed, for example, outside the city. If fireworks do start during a walk, Golubev recommended calming the pet, talking calmly to him, “getting down to his level and offering him shelter if he wants to hide.”
He also called for checking the leash and collar before a walk, as well as providing the dog with an address tag to make it easier to find it later if it runs away.
