Users will see a beautiful love story of two unique artists inspired by the elements of music and dance. For 25 days in the new series of the exhibition, they will discover the path of heroes: their childhood, adolescence, their creative path before they met, the meeting that changed their fate, and joint projects.
“An amazing example of the harmony and talent of the marital and creative union of Maya Plisetskaya and Rodion Shchedrin has become the main theme of our new online project. We came up with an unusual format, when the exhibition is released serially, like an online series with a new series broadcast once a week. Every four days, the audience will be waiting for a new series from the life of two elements – a great ballerina and a brilliant composer. We hope that the anticipation of each new episode will grow until the final release, when the full puzzle of this amazing story of loyalty to each other and art will be put together.– commented the general director of the Bakhrushin Museum Christina Trubinova.
For viewers, this is an opportunity to see not only archival photos of the two creators, but also objects from the museum’s collection, which, thanks to the Zoom effect, can be studied thoroughly. Each photo was processed by the artist manually.
The color palette is symbolic and reflects the taste of Maya Mikhailovna, who preferred pure colors, contrasts, loved art and supported artists, often posing for them. The combination of black and white tones and pure saturated colors became the basis of the artistic idea of the project. The red color stands out in particular as a reference to the famous ballet Carmen Suite. The musical material for it was orchestrated by Rodion Shchedrin, and Maya Plisetskaya performed the part of Carmen for the first time at the Bolshoi.
The first series of the project starts on the birthday of the ballerina – November 20 – with a story about her childhood, impressions and parents. The final episode will be released on December 16, the birthday of Maya Mikhailovna’s husband, the famous composer Rodion Shchedrin, who will celebrate his 90th birthday this year. In the final, the audience will share the creative success of two great creators who gave the world real works of art – the ballets The Seagull, Anna Karenina, Carmen Suite, Lady with a Dog.
New episodes will be released on schedule: November 24 and 28, then – December 2, 6, 10 and 14. A countdown timer installed on episodes that are closed for viewing will tell viewers how much time is left before the premiere of a new episode.
The audience will get acquainted with the childhood of Rodion Shchedrin and the beginning of his career, as well as the period of Maya Plisetskaya’s studies at the Moscow Choreographic School and her first appearances on stage.
Then they will find out who fatefully introduced Plisetskaya and Shchedrin, where their first meeting took place and what place the Bolshoi Theater occupied in their lives.
Separate chapters are devoted to Plisetskaya’s ballets – from the first parties to iconic and beloved ones: “The Dying Swan”, “Raymonda”, “Swan Lake”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Spartacus” and many others. others
In the chapter on the work of a ballerina with foreign choreographers – Alberto Alonso, Roland Petit, Maurice Béjart, Gigi Cachuleanu the memories of the ballerina will be heard in the first person.
The Moscow apartment of the spouses, where they lived for more than thirty years, will also become the hero of the project. Here, joint ideas were born, embodied in new works, significant meetings were held with eminent guests, Maya Plisetskaya left here on her last visit to Moscow in 2015. In February 2022, Rodion Shchedrin donated this apartment to the Bakhrushin Museum.
The geometry of life of Plisetskaya and Shchedrin is made up of different space-time relations and planes, but its center, in which all lines and points gather, is in their co-creative service to Russian art. Among the reasons why she did not go to the West, Maya Plisetskaya always named the two most significant: Shchedrin, who “he was firmly riveted with iron, albeit invisible threads to Russia, to Russian culture, history, customs”, and the stage of the Bolshoi Theater – “inhumanly beautiful, the most comfortable in the entire solar system, in the entire universe”.
