Excluding social studies from grades 6–8 will not deprive you of knowledge on it – Kommersant

Assistant to the President of Russia Vladimir Medinsky believes that the exclusion of social studies from the curriculum for grades 6–8 will not lead to a reduction in knowledge in this subject. In his opinion, some of the material will go into the history curriculum, and some will be studied from the 9th grade. The authors are currently writing a textbook on social studies for grades 9–11; it will not be ready until 2025.

“Substantial knowledge will not be removed anywhere. Something will go into history, something will go to another class. The program itself remains the same, but the study will become more convenient for the student and the teacher,” said Mr. Medinsky TASS.

According to the presidential aide, the changes will eliminate the “wild overload” of one class and “an unexpected amount of general knowledge about social studies” at another time. According to him, everything will be “synchronized and arranged so that there is enough time for everything, calmly and consistently.” Mr. Medinsky believes that now there are many similar subjects in the school curriculum, and the authorities want to redistribute hours within these programs – social studies, history, regional history and the course “Fundamentals of the Spiritual and Moral Culture of the Peoples of Russia.”

In February, the Ministry of Education proposed increasing the number of hours for studying history in the school curriculum by almost one and a half times by adjusting the social studies course. It is assumed that social studies will now be studied from the 9th grade.
