A criminal case has been initiated against former Moscow municipal deputy Lyudmila Stein for spreading fake news about the Russian army.

A law enforcement source said that on March 27, 2022, Stein, being a deputy of the Basmanny district of Moscow, posted comments on Twitter. In them, according to the investigation, under the guise of being reliable, she posted “deliberately false information about the commission of war crimes by servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.”

During the monitoring, the prosecutor’s office identified the post of the deputy and sent materials to the Investigative Committee.

Part 2 of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation imputed to her provides for a fine, forced labor or imprisonment for a period of 5 to 10 years.

In August 2021, the Preobrazhensky Court of Moscow appointed Stein one year of restriction of freedom in the case of inciting to violate the sanitary and epidemiological rules at an uncoordinated rally. In November of the same year, the Moscow City Court approved the verdict. In May 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs put her on the wanted list, and in June the court toughened Stein’s sentence to real imprisonment.
