Ex-mayor of Vladivostok sentenced to 16.5 years in prison for corruption

The Leninsky District Court of Vladivostok sentenced the former mayor of Vladivostok Oleg Gumenyuk to 16.5 years in prison for taking bribes in the amount of 38 million rubles. He will also have to pay a fine of 150 million rubles.
The state prosecution requested 17 years in a strict regime colony and a fine of 150 million rubles for Oleg Gumenyuk. The ex-mayor is charged with bribes totaling 38 million rubles. In addition to patronizing the ritual business, the investigation believes, Mr. Gumenyuk also helped an acquaintance who was engaged in construction to obtain lucrative contracts.
Oleg Gumenyuk pleaded not guilty. According to the ex-mayor, he did not take bribes, and the accusation is based on the testimony of businessman Sergei Sirotin. According to Mr. Gumenyuk, he slandered him in order to receive the minimum punishment.
In November last year, the same Leninsky District Court found local businessman Sirotin guilty of mediation in bribery (part 4 of article 291.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and sentenced him to four years in a strict regime colony and a fine of 62.5 million rubles. This is a double amount of the bribe that Sirotin transferred from December 22, 2018 to February 24, 2021 to the former mayor of Vladivostok Oleg Gumenyuk “for the general patronage and connivance of the activities of the Necropolis MBU.”
Another 6.9 million rubles, according to the investigation, Oleg Gumenyuk received in the period 2016-2018, when he headed the Economic Department of the Primorsky Territory Administration.
Mr. Gumenyuk has been in detention since October 2021. On May 18 of the same year, he resigned from the post of head of Vladivostok, after the presidential envoy in the Far Eastern Federal District, Yuri Trutnev, complained to him about the quality of the repair of the children’s industrial park, and the governor of Primorye, Oleg Kozhemyako, said that the work of the mayor did not satisfy residents.
Oleg Gumenyuk has served as Acting Mayor of Vladivostok since December 2018 before being elected Mayor by the local Duma in March 2019.
